Google+ is a social media that has got a lot of flack from consumers. It is not a social media that many audiences use for personal social engagement, however, if you are a business owner it can be one of the most powerful and underutilized social media tools at your disposal.
In almost all business scenarios good social media use focusses on effective audience engagement. Work is put into developing a real connection with your target market. Energy and creativity is harnessed to make interesting and compelling content. However, on Google+ the audience response, although useful, is secondary to the primary benefit – gaining greater control over search engine results.
At the point where Google decided to expand into the lucrative world of social media they threw their full weight behind it. Google effectively re-wired it’s relationship with its users to encourage the use of its new social functions. Although all but niche enthusiasts began socialising on its platform for enjoyment, many businesses were quick to be sold the benefits of creating one of its business pages. Posts to Google+ influence Google’s search results. Within a few weeks of daily posting, images from G+ business pages begin to appear in Google’s image search. Not only this, but an active account will see the amount a space and information offered in Google search results greatly increase. The less Google+ found its feet, the sweeter they made the deal for those who could be tempted.
Google has long since given up on G+ becoming a serious rival of Facebook, or Twitter, when it comes to chilling out and catching up in the virtual world, but it’s work putting G+ content into the heart of Google search has not been discarded. Google has responded to the business market by pairing G+ more closely with its map functions. G+ business pages now influence the information that accompanies a map pin. Photos, descriptions and contact details can all be added on G+ , with the changes enriching the information available to Google map users. This ability to modify Google maps information can be extremely effective for engaging with audiences searching for services in your area.
How G+ will continue to integrate into the immense Google machine is as yet unknown, but, whilst it is still hard wired into search results, every business can benefit from this unique chance to manipulate and expand their search results.
