How Does Affiliate Marketing Work?

Anyone who is interested in earning money from home has probably done some research into the many different jobs that are done online. In the course of their research, they will undoubtedly hear the term “affiliate marketing” over and over and they may wonder what it means. They may also wonder, how does affiliate marketing work?

Affiliate marketing at its most basic definition is simply a business model in which one party (the advertisers) pay another party (the publisher) to promote their goods and services on a web site. For instance, Zach of Zach’s Sporting Goods may pay the publisher of a site called “All Athletes.com” to advertise his store or particular items within his store. If he promotes one particular item on a site related to that he will get even more targeted penetration. But how does affiliate marketing work for Zach and the publisher of the athletes site? It is a mutually beneficial arrangement, one of the keys to affiliate marketing.

Zach only pays the Athlete site when he is given customers through that site’s link. The publisher gets traffic to their site, and directed traffic will end up at the athlete’s site. Zach only pays when there is success. So the question may not always be how does affiliate marketing work, but when. And the answer to that question is simply whenever someone leaves the athlete site to visit Zach’s site and make a purchase.

How does affiliate marketing work as a career? Many people make a very solid living by doing nothing but affiliate marketing, but you should know that they worked themselves up to that level with dedication and determination. Most people start with one web site and then add as soon as that one starts pulling in money and they have the hang of it. At first, building a web site is a challenge for many people, especially those with little or no computer experience. Soon, though, they will be able to whip up a site and have it published and running in no time at all. For them, the challenge might be not in the building but in the restraining themselves from overbuilding. The temptation to have sites in every niche  is tempting but not always a good idea. If you are spreading your efforts too thin, there are bound to be breaks in your efforts.

How does affiliate marketing work as a sideline career or part time job? Because it is mostly hands off once your site is built and published, you can continue  to work other projects or jobs as long as you keep checking on your site on a regular basis. It is not totally hands off, because you need to do regular updates and checks, however you do not have to be working with your website four or five hours of every day to make a success as a part time affiliate marketer. The more time and effort that you put into it, however, the more success you will have.
