I Hate My Job! by Tammie M. Boulden, MBA, MAEd

If you wake up each day, dreading what awaits you on the job, then you need to change your career destiny, quick! There is nothing worse than working in a position that is unfulfilling, doing something you rather not do for a company you do not like, surrounded by co-workers who irk you day in and day out. This is where career planning and management comes in handy.

According to Deloitte’s Shift Index survey, 80% of all workers are dissatisfied with their jobs. Many are afraid to change their careers, because they have yet to muster up the courage to seek a job they are passionate about as opposed to collecting a pay check instead. The good news is that once things shift, such as a layoff or a termination occurs  these same employees who hate their jobs, are able to change their career focus. They can now choose a job they are passionate about as opposed to collecting a steady paycheck in a job they no longer enjoy.

One must be willing to do what is necessary to find the right career, as opposed to settling for any job. Your very life may depend on. No matter what your salary, perks, or benefits may be, if you are in a position that you absolutely detest, eventually, you will show your true colors. As you begin to resent your job choice, it will show at the most inopportune time, your performance may become lackluster or unsatisfactory, thus perhaps ending the very job that you need of course to pay the bills. Believe it or not, managers and supervisors, are trained to know when their employees are unhappy, even if they perform well or show up every day.

At this point in your career, if you hate your job, then you must make a change to improve your lifestyle, salary, and your skills or talents. Speaking of which, are you in a career that allows you to use all of your skills, experience, or do your talents remain hidden? If so, then career planning is exactly where you should start. Begin by looking for a better position that actually rewards and acknowledges your skills as a valuable asset. You can begin by updating your resume, networking, engaging in professional development, industry training, or going back to school to obtain another degree in your field.

Once you begin researching what is needed in your industry as far as skills or new experience, you will learn what path to take to improve your career outlook. Your next step involves developing and scheduling a timeline to take action. Managing your career will require your attention daily to begin the process of owning how you shape your next career move. It will not happen, unless you work diligently towards implementing key strategies each and every day to change your career satisfactorily. Industry research is essential to ensure you do not waste time, energy, and effort jumping from job to job, or company to company without properly planning what exactly you need to be successful and satisfied when you change careers.

Finally, if you truly hate your job, but may love the company you work for, then look internally for better options that will take your career to the next level. Communicate with your manager, human resources, and a career counselor regarding what it will take to find a position more suitable for you in the near future. Make it clear that you want to be able to use all of your skills and experience in a new position that offers growth in alignment with your career path. Many people fail to communicate their career goals, accomplishments, or training they’ve obtained while in their current positions until it’s too late. They become upset when they see the new guy hired for the job that they could have easily done had they made it known they were interested and highly qualified. It’s time to face facts, unfortunately, some managers, truly do not know what talent they already have in place or do not look internally because they are basically not good at promoting and retaining. So, that becomes your job, promote yourself! Chose passion over a steady paycheck and you will find the job you love. Never rely on others to tell you what you’re worth. Update your resume to effectively market your skills and make an impression that brings desired results to change your career path.
