Soccer is one of the most popular sports today. It is popularly known as football and is played between two teams of eleven players each. The International governing body of football is FIFA, which also has six confederations. It is FIFA which organizes the main international world cup. The main objective of the game is to score by getting a ball in the opposite goal. It is one of the widely looked forward games.
In the game, the players cannot use their hands to touch or even hold the ball. However, goal keepers are the only ones that can touch the ball with their hands, in order to save the goal. The game is played in around 200 countries. India too has an official national football team and many football clubs.
Sailendra Nath Manna is one of the famous soccer players that India has ever seen. He is considered to be one of the best defenders India has ever produced. He has represented and captained India in different International competitions. He has also represented India in the Olympics and the Asian Games. He is well known for his captaincy across the globe such that he has been named among the 10 best captains in the world by the English FA in 1953.
Sailendra Nath graduated from the Surendranath University, Calcutta and then worked for the geological survey of India as well. The college is affiliated to the University of Caluctta. He started his playing career for Howrah Union in 1940 and after that he joined the Mohun Bagan in 1942. He played for the Mohun Bagan for 19 years till his retirement.
S.N. Manna proved to be a tremendous captain and under his captaincy, India was able to win big in the Asian games and Quandrangular Tournament. He received the Padmashri by the Government of India in 1971 for his excellent contribution in the field of sports and was also awarded the “Footballer of the Millennium” by All India Football Federation in 2000.
S. N. Manna died in 2012 due to prolonged ill health. He was one of the best footballer that the country has ever seen. At Present the captain of the Indian Football Team is sunil Chhettri. He is the all time top goal scorer for India in International matches with 50 International match as of now. Other great players at present are Baichung Bhutia and Subrata Paul, to name a few. Both of them are in the Indian National Team at present.
