Social Media in Schools

How important is social media in the education system? How does it offer good opportunities for knowledge and learning? This article helps you in answer all these questions related to the benefits of social media in schools.

Social Media is an important part of modern society. It means communicating among individuals for generating, sharing and exchanging the information in virtual communities, groups and networks.  The term is used so broadly that it can define almost any internet website today. Some of the famous social media sites are Facebook, Google, Wikipedia and Twitter. These sites are very easy to access and almost anyone can join these social media websites.

Social media is a vital part of daily life for most people. Schools are no exception. Recently most of the schools have started using social media to provide better education services and assistance to students and teachers. Social media offers many opportunities for knowledge, learning and interaction, and if you take a moment to think about it, it is not too hard to see how students benefit from using it.

Educational tool: Social media websites are designed for the purpose of common and open connections. Today’s youth are accessing Twitter, Instagram and Facebook to connect and share the information with their friends. Social media platforms provide a way for students to easily interact with each other regarding school assignments, projects and research. It also helps connect teachers, students and administrators to share the intellectual discussion without being inside the classroom.

Increase student participation: Social media is an effective medium to enhance student engagement and build better interpersonal and communication skills. Students who do not participate in class may feel more comfortable expressing their ideas on Twitter, Facebook or YouTube. It can result in building the student’s confidence and encourage them to participate in group discussions.

Improve students-teachers’ interaction: Social media helps in improving the communication between teachers and students. Teachers can clear the student’s doubt via a Twitter feed or Facebook page.  Any questions that they may have can be asked through social media and other students can also benefit from the response given by the teacher. They can easily share homework assignments, notes, class schedules, etc. on social media websites.

Announcement tool: Social media can be used as a bulletin board for important announcements. It can be used to deliver the real-time information on sports events, parents-teachers meetings, school admissions, exam schedule and more. By doing so, administration can save the time, energy, efforts, and even papers in spreading urgent messages to students, parents and the whole community.

Connection with stakeholders: One of the greatest benefits of using social media in school is connecting with stakeholders and delivering important information on student progress, athletic events, staff innovations, meetings and other important updates of the school.

Increase brand awareness: Schools can easily share their annual progress reports, news and other content through social media and parents can also access the same. Parents need not visit the school for any information. It helps in increasing brand awareness and building a positive brand presence.

Emergency notification: Emergencies and tragedies do happen. With the growing demand of social media websites, schools are finding it convenient and quick to spread news during an emergency hour by adding their e-mail ids and text alerts with a Facebook and a Tweet post or message.

Help students for successful employment: Students entering the professional world can use social media for finding employment and networking. Through LinkedIn, students can create a professional web presence, find a target company, post a resume, and connect with other job seekers and prospective employers. Students can also follow professional organizations or businesses on Twitter and Facebook to stay updated on new openings and important developments in their field.

Getting wired via mobile: The school can also get a mobile application and connect with students, teachers and parents. Stanford University has its students connected through a mobile application. Last year the school released a free iPhone application called iStanford that allows students to register for classes, look up campus maps and be able view the location of their friends on a map – instant messaging them if need be.

These are just a few of the many benefits of using social media in schools. However, everything has its advantages and disadvantages. Students that use social media may lose their ability to involve in face-to-face communication. Social media can be a distraction in class it can also give a rise to cyberbullying activities. This will defeat the purpose of the medium altogether. The real challenge lies in overpowering the disadvantages and making sure that the advantages make the desired effect.

In conclusion, social media is a rather an effective way for students to interact with each other and also to get their education. It not only plays a dynamic role in connecting people, but also play an important role in education.
