Top 10 List of Things you Must Do When Job hunting

Top 10 things you must do when job hunting

10. Join a gym –Constantly getting rejected can leave anyone feeling worthless and overtime can lead to low self-esteem and low self-confidence. Likewise, sitting down at home doing nothing for a couple weeks, even months can take its toll on anyone. The best thing you can do for yourself is to keep active and most importantly, keep positive. Keep positive about life, about your success at finding a job and everything else, keep a positive attitude! For myself, I did not join a gym but I started dancing Salsa. I attended a couple classes and stopped dancing years ago, and I was actually happy to find the time to start back dancing.

Now I have the time to finally break out of that beginner’s stage in Salsa and hold my own on the dance floor. I highly recommend The Secret law of Attraction by Jack Canfield. This has kept me very upbeat and always filled with ideas.

Staying positive is very important, you don’t know when someone is going to call you for an interview. You do not want to sound defeated and depressed on the telephone or in emails. No Employer wants to hire someone with a low self esteem or low self confidence. When you energy and confidence level is raised, it radiates to everything around you. Stay positive and energetic. 9. Learn to Sell Yourself — Let us first do this exercise. I want you to think about the last big item you purchased. It could’ve been a car, a computer or something from the web, you name it. Why did you buy it? Yes you wanted it; yes you probably knew what you were looking for. But why did you buy that one? There are millions of others out there. What is that one thing about that one that made it so special? When you saw it, remember the way it made you feel. Yes that feeling you have been longing for. Yes, you couldn’t deny it. You had to buy it.

People always react to the feelings envisioned. Well, let’s apply this to our situation here. Imagine a hiring manager having that ecstatic feeling when viewing your resume. What can you write on your resume to make a hiring manager feel that way about you? What can you say on that first phone interview to make them feel that way about you?

The big challenge here is selling yourself. Most of us finished School not prepared to enter this fierce job marketplace. So the next best thing you can do to improve yourself personally is learn to speak and write. Learning to sell yourself is the most important skill you can learn possibly more important than the subject knowledge you learned at school. Doing some recommended readings like “Become an Expert Persuader” will help tremendously.  You can get anything from anyone if you say the right things, A friend of mine would always say.

8. Edit you Resume – Revamp your resume. For each company you applied to, you should have a slightly different resume. Research each company thoroughly, know what their needs are. Identify one of their most important needs, and highlight that one thing your resume (don’t lie it will come back to bite you). Make it stand out! Don’t put too many unrelated material and clutter your main points either. This is all part of advertising yourself and selling yourself initially. I don’t care how many times you did this already. It is worth doing again. Do you know what else helps or hurt your resume? When you are happy with your resume, send an updated copy to anyone who you contacted earlier. It’s always a good thing to always be in front their face, they will remember you(for the right things). Click Here for Professional Resume Building Tips and Software!

7. Build a Website – We are living in the 21st Century, that’s the new trend.  Create your Brand! The main purpose of your website is to market yourself. Think of all the major companies out there, we all know them for something. For example, Walmart-“Save money. Live Better” or BudWeiser-“Here we Go” or Geico-“15 ?????”… What is yours? When an employer things about you, what’s the first thing they thing about? It doesn’t have to be smart or withy; it just must be repeated in front of them over and over. List your resume on there, any portfolios you may have, hobbies, interests, projects you are working on, links to assignments you had while in school, you name it. Anything you want to put on there. Your family, wife (or special other) places you last visited. Whatever you want!

Then you will put a link to this website in the signature of you professional email addresses (something you should already have). This shows your potential employer that you are not like the thousands of other applicants. You are unique, innovative, and full of life and energy; always takes the extra step and I would love to have someone like that on my team. You can easily build a free website on the net these days. Places such as blogger.com or even on this wonderful website will allow you to make a webpage for free.

It depends on how much you want to put on there. If you need to store files etc, you may want to upgrade. I use Globat because of their templates and they allow me ftp access along with other marketing services that is very useful in my line of work.

6. Improve your computer skills – Every business is advancing now so having an array of computer skills will definitely put you ahead of the competition. Start doing tutorials on any software that you know will be useful in your field. You can put these on your resume when you feel you have mastered it or comfortable with it. This will greatly improve the way employers see you and your potential value to them. The job market is really tough, so no matter how long it takes to get that job, when you get one you will be ready. When you are finished with one software, saved any projects you did and move on to another one. This may just increase your pay grade on your first job. Ok, I won’t recommend any links here, this is up to you.

5. Send thank you or follow up emails periodically– Send a thank you email for any reason. Make sure you have your website and slogan in the signature. You can send an email thanking them for calling you. Summarize your conversation with them and restate what you can do for them and how excited you are to join them. Or send a thank you email to someone for referring you to a company. Thank them after the first interview, email and a card. Always summarizing your conversation and restating your interests and what you can do for them. Tailored properly, what you can do for them should be what they wanted in their jobs ads, website etc.. And the hardest one of all, thank them for considering you after a denial letter or email and be as professional as possible. This way, you always get your name, slogan and website in front on them. You are building your brand. If you have a hot lead, when someone shows some interest, don’t let it go cold. This part is almost like a dating game, have fun with it. Send an email to find out what’s going on or where they are in the process. Ask questions, stay in contact with that person. Warning! However, don’t overdo the emails or phone calls. Space them out if a response is not warranted. Remember to stay positive! Someone is going to see you and absolutely love you.

4. Develop a daily schedule and stick to it, as if you were working. – Being away from work or your usual activity for an extended period of time can wreak havoc on your psyche. Wake up early, plan you day. Set aside time to work on your website, your job hunt, leave some time for your tutorials, for the gym or dancing or running. Whatever you do to relax and distress. Remember, stay positive! Look at this as a much needed time off to better yourself in every area. And guess what, you are happy for it because every day that goes by; you are improving yourself in all areas of your life.

3. Build another website– At some point in time, you will need to have some money coming in. So what follows here is a rather inexpensive way to make money while you wait. You don’t necessarily have to create another website. Open a CLICKBANK account. Here you sell other peoples material (mostly digital products) and you get a healthy commission for each sale. You can also sell any digital products you want on there, this could be very profitable. Another great idea is to create an informational website about some current hot topic.  Weave some affiliate links and some Google adsense code throughout your pages. You will be amazed with the traffic you receive in just a couple of weeks. This will start making some money for you over a couple of weeks or months. Eventually, when you get good ranking on Google and other search engines, you can set and forget this website..Or update it once in awhile. As time passes by, your visitors will increase and you will make more and more money from your Clickbank links or Google adsense codes.

2. Go back to step 4. This time include no.3 in your schedule. It’s very important that you manage your time carefully and don’t get too boggled down with one thing. Remember keep positive about everything you do! You want to actively continue your job hunt. You know after awhile, this website will start making some money for you. When you do get a job, you will have two sources of income.

And The No.1 thing you need to do when you cannot find a job

1. Write an article about your summer, your experience trying to get an internship in this new career field and what you have learned about job hunting that changed compared to five years ago when you last entered the job market.

Bonus:  Tips (Not to do list)

Tip#1 Do not apply to a company online and expect a timely reply. Or worse yet, apply online and think that’s all you have to do to get a job. It may work but most likely will not.  There must be a face with your application and a personality they can trust.  That’s why most people end up getting jobs through referrals or they know someone on the inside. A matter of fact, most companies just list vacancies because they are obligated to.  In some cases, they already know who they will hire.

Tip#2 I don’t recommend trying to make money on Ebay, unless you have some capital and you can buy products at the cheapest wholesale price.
