How To Find A Good Local Gas Safe Plumber

We all know how hard it is to find a good local gas safe plumber, so what is the best way to find one?

To start with, speak to your neighbours and friends who may have their own local gas safe plumber that they use.

Try to find out as much as possible about their work and their general manner, are they someone you can trust, are they expensive, do they clean up once finished?

If you are lucky enough to find someone through your friends and neighbours, give then a call and ask if they would like to come round so you can meet them to discuss some work that you are contemplating soon.

Once they arrive you can get a feel of what they are like, it’s a natural instinct that we seem to have. You may feel that something is not right, they may be OK for your friend but not for you.

One of the best ways to find a local plumber is to visit the gas safe register website, you enter your postal code into site and you will be given details of three local gas safe plumbers. Anybody who works with gas has to be registered with gas safe.

Another very popular way of finding a local plumber these days is by visiting trade websites, there are many to choose, just do a search on the internet and you will be presented with many of these trade websites.

Most of these trade sites vet and check everyone who want to register with them. Where gas is involved, the trade sites also check the trades person with the gas safe register to double check they are registered.

Once you find a local gas safe plumber there are a few things you need to do for your own benefit. Gas is dangerous in the wrong hands.

First you need to ask to see the plumbers gas safe card, if they cannot produce it, or they tell you they have forgotten it, its at home, then ask them to come back another time with the card. No card, no work.

The gas card is very important, on the front of the card is a picture of the local gas plumber, if the picture is not of the person in front of you, then ask them where their one is. The person who will be carrying out the gas work has to carry his own card with him all the time while working.

You will also see an expiry date, this expires every year at the end of March, so always check the card is still valid. Everybody who is gas registered has to renew their registration before the end of March.

Also on the card you will see the registration number of the person or company they work for. Many people can be registered under the same number, but everyone will have their own card with their picture on.

Now you have checked over the front section of the gas safe card you now need to turn over and check the back, this section is where you find out what the plumber is qualified to work on.

It’s very important that you check this section of the card, as an example, lets say you want a new boiler fitted, check the card for boilers, if there is no boilers on the card, then they cannot work on boilers. They may only be registered for fires, that’s all they can work on. The gas safe card tells you everything that the plumber can work on.

There are so many people claiming to be gas safe registered, that it’s very important for you to carry out your own checks, even if your friend or neighbour give you details of their local gas plumber, you should always check their gas safe card to make sure it is still valid and they are qualified for the work you would like them to do.

Finding a good local gas safe plumber is not easy, but once you do find a good one, keep his number safe.

One last thing, if you use someone who claims to be gas safe registered, and they are not, should something happen, then you will find that your home insurance will not be valid for the damage.
