How To Avoid These 5 Common Mistakes When Repairing or Installing Kitchen Plumbing

Kitchen plumbing tends to be somewhat overlooked by the casual homeowner. You turn the sink on & off, you use a disposal unit or trash compactor, and that’s about it. It’s not until there is a problem that you realize that your kitchen’s plumbing is the lifeblood of your home because it affects a pivotal room’s function.

Couple this attitude with the current rise of the “DIYer”, and you have yourself a major problem. Your kitchen’s plumbing, and the plumbing in your home in general, is serious business, so it is important to take note of what things to avoid when either repairing your current set-up or installing new items:

1. Don’t Choose Your Cabinets before Choosing A Sink – Depending on just what type of sink you want to use, whether it be an undermount model or a drop-in for example, your current plumbing and cabinetry needs to work with any changes in dimensions. While this can be a relatively easy repair for a trained installer, the casual person may be unable to know what to do to fix the issue. You want to be sure all of your installation choices coincide with each other. Even though this adage applies to carpentry, it still rings true in this case — “Measure twice and cut once.”

2. Make Sure You Keep Your Pipe Materials in Mind – If you look around many homes, you can spot where repairs have taken place over the years based solely on the differences in materials used for the repair. While combining materials for a repair isn’t a bad thing in your kitchen’s plumbing, corrosion and leaks can show up sooner than expected. Over time, these weaknesses can lead to disastrous problems.

3. Do Not Rush The Job – Any home repair/remodel project can lead to moments of absolute frustration and anger because it seems as though there is no end in sight. After all, all you wanted was a cute spruce-up of a room you frequently use. However, plumbing work isn’t something that should be rushed. Rushing leads to bad judgments and guesswork and that helps no one.

4. Get Help From A Plumbing Expert – Sometimes, you need to know when to cry, “Uncle!” This seems to be a common problem for both new and experienced “DIYers” in that asking help from plumbers for certain jobs is considered giving up. If you’re engaging in a full-fledged kitchen project that delves into the inner workings of your kitchen’s plumbing, getting the right person in place to help you out is actually the smartest thing you can do. They have expertise that can guide you along the way and help you avoid mistakes and costly problems.

5. Keep To Your Budget – Most people wouldn’t consider budget an important part of kitchen plumbing repair or installation, but it makes sense to at least know the numbers attached to your proposed changes. Put together a reasonable budget based on what you need and what you want available, and when it comes to repairs, don’t be afraid to see what you can do yourself, but do know when to quickly get a pro in for help.

Kitchen plumbing mistakes do not have to be a given. Just be sure to use some common sense, a little planning, and above all else, don’t be afraid to get some help.
